Our History |
Our History Vodka industry appeared as a result of the reforms of Peter the Great. During the foundation of Saint Petersburg he ordered to organize the industrial production of vodka on the banks of Neva River, in front of the Nienshantz Fortress which has been ruined by an assault of the Russian Navy. Thus the first state distillery had appeared. This was the prototype of our future company. Peter the Great granted the nobility privileges in distillation, with hardly any control and without taxation. His only condition was that vodka could not be a matter of trade. The finished product was to be used for family needs only and the nobility promised to keep vodka as a class privilege rather than make it a source if income. In such social conditions vodka as a product had reached the utmost quality in serfdom Russia. The assortment of vodka was amazing – there were over 100 different types of vodkas. Quite often it was barley catchable but nevertheless each of them had their own unique difference from each other. One of the most modern home distilleries at that time was considered to be the distillery of Sergey Golitsin, an associate of Peter the Great. Vodka from his house had the highest rating among the aristocracy as well as the peasantry for its ultimate quality and delicate flavor. When the emperor decided to organize vodka production, Duke Golitsin was the one to be head of the first state distillery. In 1897 at the place of the old distillery located at Kalashnikovskaya (nowadays Sinopskaya) embankment 56/58 was decided to establish a high-capacity distillery or the so called at those times “wine storehouse”. It was the number one distillery in the list of over 300 new distilleries of the Russian alcohol industry. Saint Petersburg spirits distillery was credited as the official Russian Imperial Family supplier. This was the only distillery in the world to produce products of equally highest quality for both: common people and the aristocracy. During World War One after the prohibition measures which had been taken by the government, vodka production in Russia stopped. In 1923 the distillery restarted production under the name of The Number One Vodka Distillery. Afterwards it was named as The Leningrad Distillery. Since the end of the ХХ century – “Liviz”. |
